How is hourly rate calculated from salary?
Standard formula: Hourly rate = Annual salary / (Hours per week × Weeks per year). Most full-time UK roles work 37.5 hours per week. Many employers quote rates using 52 weeks (i.e. paid for holidays), so the standard divisor is 1,950 hours (37.5 × 52).
Frequently asked questions
What's the standard UK working week?
Full-time roles in the UK are typically 37.5 hours/week, though some sectors (NHS, finance) use 35 or 40. The legal maximum under the Working Time Regulations is 48 hours/week unless you opt out.
Does my hourly rate include holiday pay?
If you're paid an annual salary, holidays are already factored in (you get full pay during holidays). Casual/agency workers paid hourly often have a separate 12.07% holiday pay accrual, calculated as 5.6 weeks ÷ 46.4 working weeks.
